High-quality assessments play an important role in providing parents/guardians, students, educators, school leaders, and district leaders with valuable information about student growth and achievement. To capture the full picture of student progress, our district relies on a balanced approach using different types of assessments.

Assessments fall into two main categories: Assessment FOR Learning, which guides daily classroom instruction, and Assessment OF Learning, which evaluates overall progress and program effectiveness.

Assessment FOR Learning

• Diagnostic Assessments: Used to identify what a student does or does not yet know, diagnose learning gaps, and highlight individual academic strengths before or during instruction.
• Formative Assessments: Used to measure how and what a student is learning in real time, providing immediate feedback to both students and teachers. These are administered frequently within the classroom context to directly inform daily instructional decisions.

Assessment OF Learning

• Interim Assessments: Administered periodically throughout the school year to track student growth and achievement across specific standards. Because these assessments are common across grade levels and groups, results can be compared to evaluate progress over time.
• Summative Assessments: Administered at the end of a unit, semester, or school year to certify student achievement across a broad collection of standards. Results are used to evaluate overall success and guide decisions regarding program and instructional effectiveness.
