Listed below are some common district processes. Please reach out to Maura Brady McMullen with any questions or processes not listed here.
Process for Therapy in Schools aka the Discovery Process
- The Discovery process is to determine if a service, such as therapy during the school day, is medically necessary for a student.
- If a student has an IEP the Discovery process will go through the special education department, and a counselor or school administrator will reach out to their school’s SPED Director.
- If a student is a general education student, including those on a 504 plan, you will first email out to Johnny Terrell, to initiate the process.
- In the email please include the student’s name, grade and school.
- Johnny will send an initial meeting invite for background information
- Once the initial meeting is conducted and determined that it’s medically necessary there will be a final meeting meeting with the outside provider, parents/guardians and school personnel.
Threat Assessment Process
- The threat assessment process should be conducted by a school administrator with a school counselor or interventionist as part of the initial discussion. Counselors and interventionists should not be the vortex of information or the person to initiate the threat screen.
- If a school determines they would like to request a full threat assessment for review the T.A. Team will meet and decide on next steps. The T.A. team meets weekly, or as needed depending on the situation, to review all threat assessments.
- Please reach out to Erin Brueggeman if you have any questions about the T.A. process.
Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting aka Mandatory Reporting
- All district employees are mandated reporters and required to report any suspected child abuse or neglect.
- Steps to report
- Go to the district website: svvsd.org
- Under Departments (top right hand corner), select Safety & Security, then on the left hand tool bar, select Safety & Security Staff Resources – login with your staff credentials to access the DocuSign pages.
- Once you’re logged in, you will find the Child Abuse link on the left hand tool bar. Click that link, and you will see a list of agencies to make a verbal report to about the suspected abuse. This landing page will also have the flow chart of steps to follow.
- Colorado Child Abuse and Neglect Hotline: 1-844-264-5437
- Once the call has been made, and the DocuSign form completed, then the report needs to be documented in Infinite Campus under the SV Student Safety tab. Documents do not need to be uploaded for abuse reports.
- All school administrators need to be alerted that a call has been made.
- If you have any questions, please reach out to Maura Brady McMullen, Johnny Terrell or Richard Peebles.
Crisis Response Process
In the event of a crisis at a school or within a department the following steps will start the process of initiating a Crisis Team to support that community:
- A principal, area assistant superintendent, department head or safety and security executive director will reach out to the Assistant Superintendent of Student Services
- Notice of a death or event is verified. The Asst. Superintendent of Student Services will check on the following:
- What happened
- When did it occur
- Do we have confirmation from the family; is it okay to share the information with the school community?
- When will you inform your staff?
- How will you inform your staff?
- What type of support do you anticipate needing?
- A text message will be generated to the Crisis Response Lead (Maura Brady McMullen) informing of the event
- MBM will then reach out to our crisis response members (there are three teams primarily made up of staff from Student Services (counselors, nurses, interpreters etc)
- Team members will report to the school or building when requested
- The district communications team will work with the Area Asst. Sups, the principal and Crisis Lead and Asst Sup of Student Services on any messaging
- If you have any questions about the process, please reach out to Maura Brady McMullen.
