Middle School & High School Honor Band

The Middle School and High School Honor Band Festival brings together talented musicians in SVVSD selected through an audition process. These students come together for intensive music making, including the opportunity to rehearse with renowned guest conductors and artists and culminating in a public concert.

Middle School Conductor – Craig Westwood

Mr. Craig Westwood is in his 21st  year as Director of Bands at Cherry Creek West Middle School and serves as an Assistant Director with the Cherry Creek High School Marching Band.  Prior to taking the position at West, Mr. Westwood was Director of Bands at Wheat Ridge High School for 9 years where his Marching Band was a state finalist each year.  He holds an Undergraduate degree in Music Education from Colorado Christian University and a Master’s Degree in Conducting from The American Band College at Southern Oregon University. 

Mr. Westwood is an active clinician/adjudicator in Concert, Jazz and Marching Band in Colorado.  From 2013-2017, Mr. Westwood served as a guest conductor at the Lebanese Band Association for the Promotion of Music (LeBAM) International Band Camp held near Beirut, Lebanon.  He is a member of the Colorado Bandmasters Association, Colorado Music Educators Association and Phi Beta Mu and is an active performer in the Denver/Boulder area as a Percussionist, primarily playing drum set.  Craig has performed with a variety of artists including Bo Diddley, “Pinetop” Perkins, Big Bill Morganfield, Don Lanphere, and The Boulder Philharmonic.  A native of Colorado, Mr. Westwood grew up in Littleton and graduated from Columbine High School.

High School Conductor – David Kish

A native of Hershey, Pennsylvania, David Kish is Director of Bands and Professor of Music at Metropolitan State University of Denver where he conducts the Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, and teaches conducting and music education courses. Since 2015, David has also served as Conductor and Musical Director of the Colorado Wind Ensemble. David is a recipient of the Faculty Senate Teaching Excellence Award at MSU Denver and the Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He has twice served as a Faculty Fellow in the Center for Innovation at MSU Denver, is a member of the editorial board for the Journal of Band Research, and curator of the J.L. Gerardi Band Research Center. In 2019, he was elected to membership in the American Bandmasters Association.

David has taught instrumental music at all educational levels, including a position as Associate Director of Bands and Franklin Fellow at the University of Georgia. His writings on wind literature, conducting pedagogy, and music education have been published in The Instrumentalist Magazine, Journal of Band Research, Music Educators Journal, and six volumes of the popular resource texts, Teaching Music Through Performance in Band. He is the author of Brass Methods: an Essential Resource for Educators, Conductors and Students, four volumes of Guides to Band Masterworks, Practicing with Purpose which received the 2018 “Best Music Education Book” from School Band & Orchestra Magazine and Visualizing Music which was recently released by GIA Publications.

Dr. Kish earned the Doctor of Musical Arts and Master of Music degrees in Instrumental Conducting and Music Education from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and Bachelor of Music in Music Education from Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania. He has presented sessions at the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic, the National Association of Music Education Conference, and various state music education conferences. He was Conductor-in-Residence at Capital Normal University in Beijing, China, and maintains an active schedule as guest conductor, clinician, and lecturer throughout the United States.
