Colorado Preschool is Building Partnerships to Grow Their Farm to Early Childcare Program

St. Vrain Valley School District in Boulder, CO, has had Farm to School programming since 2012, but had a strong resurgence after receiving a Colorado Department of Education (CDE) Student Wellness Grant in 2018. The Colorado Department of Education is a Fiscal Year (FY) 2021 Farm to School State Agency grantee. They used their grant to provide sub-grant awards to eligible SFAs with priority given to SFAs where at least a 40% of children served are eligible for free or reduced-price meals. Using the funds received from their grant, St. Vrain was able to build several school education gardens and outdoor classrooms, and host Colorado Proud School Meal Day celebrations, Harvest of Month local produce taste tests, and student-led farmer’s markets. With funding from the USDA Farm to School Transitioning ECE and Agriculture Meal Environment (TEAM) grant has allowed St. Vrain to move into Farm to Early Care and Education (ECE) programming at Spark! Discovery Preschool.  St. Vrain has worked at establishing new partnerships and building community support which led to the installation of preschool garden beds and agriculture and nutritional education opportunities. St. Vrain’s Agriscience/Future Farmers of America (FFA) mentorship program began its education and hands-on garden support within the district in 2022, and Spark! Discovery Preschool was one of the first mentorship education sites. FFA students developed and taught hands-on skills and provided engaging lesson topics on soil, pollinators and plant nutrients. Children learned about these important aspects of farming through lessons and planting their own garden beds.  Farm to ECE efforts have bolstered the snack program through a 10 cent per meal local food incentive program offered through the Farm to School TEAM grant. Spark! Discovery Preschool is providing delicious, great tasting hyper-local fresh heirloom tomato salsa with colorful tomatoes from Rocky Mountain Fresh Hydroponic Farm in Longmont, Colorado. Theresa Spires, the Wellness Coordinator stated that, “Kids are fun, naturally curious and excited to learn! They are adventurous and can problem solve even at this young age. They ask when we will be back and what they will be learning the next time our Agriscience mentors are back in the classroom teaching lessons or digging in the gardens.”

Test scores show return on investment for St. Vrain students

District’s CMAS, SAT results outpace state in several areas

St. Vrain Valley School District is making notable gains on standardized testing, ahead of the state on several metrics.

On Wednesday, the state released the results of the Colorado Measures of Academic Success and SAT and PSAT scores for this year. This is the first full year of CMAS testing for St. Vrain and the entire state since 2019, since no tests were given in 2020 due to the pandemic and last year students only took either math or literacy tests based on their grade level, instead of both.

Eagle Crest Elementary School Joins Coding Cohort

Students at Eagle Crest Elementary School will begin the 2022-2023 school year embarking on a new and exciting opportunity – they are one of 500 educational organizations that have been chosen to be a part of the second cohort of the Scratch Education Collaborative (SEC), and are the only organization from Colorado. The SEC is a two-year program that supports and works toward creating sustainable practices to engage students in equitable creative coding.

Eagle Crest’s focus is to bring more creative coding opportunities to students, connect creative coding opportunities to their leadership focus program, and build new relationships with the international creative community.

“Participation in this cohort will have a positive impact on student learning through the culminating project; a self-sustaining program to increase creative coding opportunities for all students,” shared Katy Schwirtz, Leadership Focus Coordinator and Innovation Garage Teacher at Eagle Crest.

The SEC will allow students to be better prepared to pursue the many computer science pathways available to them at the middle and high school level in St. Vrain, and will give students the probability to use coding while developing their leadership skills, and leverage coding to help build a better world.

For Schwirtz, she’s most looking forward to, is the positive impact this cohort will have on their students. “I am excited to learn all I can about the best way to integrate more creative coding in a sustainable way at Eagle Crest, and I am looking forward to collaborating with the Scratch Education team and others from around the world.”

Eagle Crest will be an asset to this cohort “because we have a passion for the power of creative coding in the hands of children,” shared Schwirtz. “We have a diverse community of learners, and the support of administrators and teachers who are always up for a new adventure that supports students’ success.”
