Back-to-School Safety and Student Well-Being Update

As we prepare to welcome students back for another school year, the safety and well-being of every student and staff member remain our highest priority.

Student safety is a shared responsibility. St. Vrain Valley Schools works closely with families, first responders, and community partners to maintain secure schools and provide resources that support students throughout the school year.

Below are several reminders and resources for the start of the school year.

Visitor Check-In System Update

This school year, St. Vrain Valley Schools will introduce a standardized digital visitor check-in system at all schools. The system will align visitor procedures across the district with practices common in other secure settings.

The system replaces paper sign-in sheets with a secure electronic process that can support direct communication during an emergency. Visitors will enter their name, cellphone number, and purpose of their visit. The system will also take a one-time photo during registration. This information will help school staff identify visitors on campus and contact them directly if needed during an emergency.

Standard Response Protocol

St. Vrain uses the Standard Response Protocol to provide clear, consistent actions for emergencies that may occur in or near a school. The protocol includes five actions: Hold, Secure, Lockdown, Evacuate, and Shelter. Students and staff practice these actions throughout the school year.

During an emergency, families should rely on official school or district updates and should not come to the school unless directed. This allows first responders and school staff to focus on the immediate response. Review the Standard Response Protocol Parent Guide to learn more about each action and what families can expect.

Safe2Tell

Safe2Tell provides students and families with a safe, anonymous way to report concerns about student or school safety. Reports may be submitted at any time through Safe2Tell.org, the Safe2Tell mobile app, or by calling 877-542-7233. Parents are encouraged to contact their child’s school if they have additional questions about school safety.

Safe Firearm Storage

Safe firearm storage helps protect children and reduces the risk of unintentional injury, suicide, and firearm theft. Research shows that secure storage is more effective than simply hiding a firearm. Colorado law requires firearm owners to use a locking device, gun safe, or gun cabinet to prevent access by children or others who are not authorized to possess a firearm.

Be Smart is a program that provides a framework that parents, caretakers, and community leaders can follow to help keep their communities safe. The program provides a structured approach using the acronym SMART:

  • Secure all guns in your home and vehicles
  • Model responsible behavior around guns
  • Ask about unsecured guns in other homes
  • Recognize the role of guns in suicide
  • Tell your peers to Be Smart

As required by House Bill 25-1250, St. Vrain Valley Schools is sharing this gun violence prevention resource for parents and guardians from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.

Community Resources

Families are encouraged to reach out to their school counselor or another trusted staff member if they need support or have concerns about themselves or someone else. Families can also contact their school for help connecting with school-based or community resources.

St. Vrain Valley Schools maintains a community resources webpage to help families connect with local services and support. Resources include 211 Colorado, which connects families with assistance in a wide range of categories available across the state, 988 Colorado Mental Health Line, which provides free, confidential support 24/7 from trained specialists through calls, texts, or live chats, and Blue Sky Bridge, which was established to provide a safe and supportive environment for abuse victims where a neutral, professionally-led forensic interview provides case information for all participating law enforcement, judicial and social service agencies.

Staying Connected
Current contact information helps St. Vrain Valley Schools reach families quickly with school updates and emergency notifications. Before the school year begins, families should log in to the Infinite Campus Parent Portal to confirm their phone number and email address. Because ParentSquare, our new district communication tool, receives contact information from Infinite Campus, any changes must be made in Infinite Campus or through your school’s registrar.

ParentSquare is St. Vrain’s central communication tool for district and school messages. Although families do not need an account or the mobile app to receive communications, families are encouraged to activate their account and download the app. ParentSquare allows users to select their preferred language and choose how they receive notifications. Urgent alerts will always be delivered immediately. Learn more about ParentSquare and update your notification preferences. Families who have not yet registered will receive an email in the coming weeks inviting them to activate their ParentSquare account.

Thank you for your partnership in supporting student safety and well-being. We look forward to welcoming students back for the 2026-27 school year. Please reach out to your child’s school with any questions.
