St. Vrain Valley Schools Finalizes Major 2016 Bond Construction Projects

In November of 2016, voters approved St. Vrain Valley’s $260.3 million bond issue by a wide margin, signifying wide community investment in public education. As teachers and students begin the start of the 2020-2021 academic year, the district’s Operations and Maintenance departments are finalizing three major 2016 bond construction projects.

Mead Elementary

Mead Elementary School

At the northeast corner of the district sits a brand new Mead Elementary School building.

Originally, the 2016 bond plans called for an addition and repairs to Mead Elementary’s building. Through careful planning and strong fiscal management, St. Vrain’s Operations and Finance teams were able to generate additional funding to support the construction of an entirely new building.

This 70,000-square-foot state-of-the-art facility was designed with its rural location in mind, incorporating a modern barn theme through its architectural framework. Principal Betsy Ball said, “I am so excited for students to be able to return. When they walk in their new school, they will see a colorful, happy place that was designed with them in mind.”

The school includes many specialized spaces. Some of the highlights include a makerspace called the “Creation Station,” an outdoor movement plaza, a two-story gym, and many open spaces with flexible seating options. Kindergarten teacher Jennifer Stanich said, “The color-coded pods make the building so colorful, there are lots of wood features throughout the building, and beautiful accent lights in our foyer. Each pod has a breakout space for students to work in with lots of flexible seating.”

“The new Mead Elementary School will be a site where children can come and learn, experience rigorous instruction, and feel proud of their school for years to come,” said Principal Ball.

Main Street School

Main Street School

Built in 1901 in the heart of downtown Longmont, Main Street School was the location of the original Longmont High School. Bond renovations at Main Street were carried out with the intention of preserving the historic elements of the building while modernizing its interior features to meet the needs of current students, teachers, and staff.

Executive Director of Special Education, Laura Hess, said, “We spent three years creating a place where students with special needs feel like this is the hub now for what we do.” Hess emphasized that the school’s location in downtown is crucial for students to have access to additional resources outside of school to support their continued growth and development.

The construction project included a new main entrance and office space, a student community kitchen and cafeteria area, and a bus loop closer to the school building. Building enhancements included a new HVAC system, updated accessibility features, additional open spaces with windows and access to natural lighting, and individual classroom updates. The many renovations have culminated to a complete renewal of the more than 100 year old building while honoring its history and putting inclusivity and innovation at the forefront. “For me, this represents who we are in St. Vrain,” said Hess.

In addition to money from the bond, the district was awarded a $2.25 million grant from the Colorado Department of Education’s Building Excellent Schools Today (BEST) Grant Program for additional renovations.  Main Street School Principal, Kate Green, is excited for students and families to see the building renovations.

“We haven’t seen our Main Street students and families in a while, but we have been working hard preparing for their return. My hope is that they feel as proud of our new school as we do.”

Longmont High School

Longmont High School

St. Vrain Valley School’s first secondary school, Longmont High School, also received major renovations from the bond this year.

The construction team began the design process by renovating the current south entrance of the school to serve as the main entryway. “We did this since it offered the most area for an addition,” said Project Manager, Sam Freeman, “The actual main entrance lacked parking and was hidden by trees, and the south side was so prominent that many visitors already thought it was the main entrance.”

Additional improvements included a remodeled and expanded cafeteria and student commons area, new counseling and career center space, improved insulation to older areas of the building, new HVAC units in every classroom, updated locker rooms, new hydration stations around the school, and new windows and siding around the exterior of the building.

“Overall the renovations have served to blend the old and new and create a bright, inviting space for staff and students at Longmont High School,” said Freeman.

Principal Jeff McMurry said, “It has been so uplifting coming into the building this year with the recent renovation. It’s been a complete transformation. The real eye opener is the new commons, which has such a collegiate atmosphere to it. We are so thankful for the support of our community who give us the ability to make Longmont High the special place that it is.”

Projects on the Horizon St. Vrain has utilized $226 million of the $260.3 million voter approved 2016 bond initiative. Upcoming projects under the bond include a new elementary school in the Erie Highlands Subdivision, a new nine classroom wing at Frederick High School, and a new pool for districtwide use at Silver Creek High School.  For an official bond update, tune in to the Board of Education meeting on September 23 >>

Updated 2020-20201 Reopening Plan

Dear St. Vrain Valley Community,

Thank you for your continued partnership as we navigate the increasingly complex, shifting, and challenging coronavirus pandemic. Over the past few days, we have been in communication with the leadership of Boulder County Public Health and we have received additional information that has a significant impact on our plans for reopening our schools. To this end, we are updating our reopening plan to begin the school year in a fully online-learning model for all students, which will continue through the last week of September. At that time, we will re-evaluate the status of the coronavirus data, including the number of cases, positivity rate percentages, and more. This will be done in partnership with our local and state health agency partners, and either implement the hybrid learning plan that we outlined earlier this month or continue with our fully online-learning model. Furthermore, we have updated the calendar so that all students in grades 1-12 will begin on August 18, kindergarten students will begin on August 20.

Students who have enrolled in the St. Vrain LaunchED Virtual Academy are able to remain in this program or they may choose to shift and begin the school year with the online-learning model through their home school. Additionally, all students still have the option to enroll in St. Vrain LaunchED Virtual Academy or remain with their home school and participate in the online blended-learning option. Please see more information later in this letter regarding these two options.

Basis for this Decision

This was a very difficult decision; however we are convinced that it is in the best interest and safety of our students, teachers, staff, and community at this time. Over the past several days, the following developments are among the reasons for our shift in our approach to reopening our schools:

  • On July 30, the Colorado Department of Health released their long-awaited guidance for schools to respond to COVID-19 cases, probable cases, potential cases, and outbreaks. Within their procedures is information that creates significant and nearly insurmountable disruptions and challenges to the safety and consistency in learning environments for families. Adherence to this guidance would undoubtedly result in ongoing and continuous potential classroom and school closures, as well as numerous individuals being subject to quarantine.
  • Cases throughout the United States continue to trend upward and recognized experts and officials continue to communicate concerns about the potential for continued increase in coronavirus cases.
  • In contrast with previous scientific studies, we continue to receive and review emerging scientific research provided to us by our county health department which indicates that children may be important drivers of COVID-19 spread.
  • Additionally, we have received numerous communications from parents, students, teachers, and staff expressing valid concerns regarding the safety and well-being of our community. Given the significant shift in information and the unrest that exists at this time, we do not believe that an in-person learning model would be conducive to learning and/or physical and emotional well-being.

Fully Online School Opening: Logistics and Supports

We are committed to providing strong student, family, teacher, and staff support during this time and have developed a number of plans and protocols to ensure that we have high-quality and equitable learning environments for our students. To access our full reopening plan, please visit our website at https://coronavirus.svvsd.org

  • High-Quality Online-Learning Model: Our fully online-learning model will be much more robust than students and families experienced when schools unexpectedly were required to discontinue in-person learning this spring. Please click the link below to learn more about the online-learning model for your student’s specific grade level, which will include synchronous (live, real-time) and asynchronous (flexible) instruction, as well as independent student assignments/work:
  • LaunchED Virtual Academy vs. Online-Learning Through Your Student’s Home School: Families who are not planning to return to a hybrid in-person learning environment as soon as it is safe to do so, and the district makes this shift, should remain enrolled or newly enroll in the LaunchED Virtual Academy. This high-quality online program – taught by St. Vrain Valley Schools’ teachers – will provide a continuity of learning in an online environment for families who want to keep their student home until a vaccine is available or there is a significant decrease in the spread of COVID-19.
  • Technology and Internet Access: St. Vrain Valley Schools has made a significant investment in technology resources to ensure a high-quality and equitable online learning environment for all students. An iPad will be available to all students in grades K-12 to support their learning at home and school. This includes students who are enrolled in the LaunchED Virtual Academy. For students who are enrolled in a charter school, please contact your school for information about technology access.
    • Details regarding device distribution will be coming directly from your student’s school next week.
    • Additionally, our district will continue to operate community WIFI hotspots and has developed additional resources for families who do not currently have internet access. Please click here to learn more.
  • Students with Disabilities: During online learning, special education services will be provided to your student. Your child’s case manager will set up a phone call with you prior to August 18, 2020 to review all of the logistics regarding when and how services will be provided as outlined in your child’s individual education plan (IEP).
  • English Language Learners, 504, and Other Services: English Language Learners, students who are on a 504 Plan, or receive other special services will continue to receive support. Families will be contacted directly regarding their child’s specific needs and services, and will receive information regarding their delivery model.
  • Social Emotional Learning and Support: St. Vrain’s robust social emotional learning curriculum will continue to be integrated into the online-learning model for all students. Additionally, counseling staff and interventionists will continue to work with students remotely to provide ongoing, high levels of support.
  • Community Schools: To support working families, St. Vrain Valley Schools will be opening Community Schools programs at all elementary schools to offer childcare for students in grades K-5. Click here to learn more about childcare options.
  • Activities, Athletics, and Clubs: Student engagement in activities outside of the school day is important to the social development and well-being of our students. School personnel will work to develop online options for students to engage socially with their peers and participate in clubs and other activities. Additionally, St. Vrain Valley Schools will continue to follow Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA) guidelines for middle and high school athletics and provide as many opportunities as possible. The following sports have been approved for the fall: boys’ golf, girls’ softball, and boys’ tennis. Information regarding additional activities and athletic offerings will be forthcoming and shared directly by your student’s school administration.
  • Nutrition Services and Food Distribution: St. Vrain Valley Schools will continue to provide drive-through breakfast and lunch meal distribution during in-person school closures for all students. Click here to learn more about meal distribution sites and schedules.

While we are beginning in an online learning environment, we do intend to phase in our hybrid learning model with 50 percent in-person instruction as soon as we believe it is safe and feasible to do so. We also maintain our ultimate goal of returning to full-time, in-person learning as soon as it is deemed safe to do so. During the last week of September, we will re-evaluate the situation related to the coronavirus, in partnership with our local and state health agency partners, at which time we will either adjust and implement the hybrid learning plan that we outlined earlier this month, or continue with our online-learning model. Additionally, your student’s school administration will be following-up with all families in the next week regarding additional important information to ensure a successful first day of online learning on Tuesday, August 18.

Again, thank you for your continued partnership, support, and flexibility during this extremely unprecedented and challenging time for our community. We continue to be inspired by the strength, grit, teamwork, compassion, and ingenuity exhibited by our teachers, staff, students, families, and others who have joined us in identifying creative solutions that support the growth and success of our students and community. If you have any questions about our reopening plan, please contact your school’s principal or feel free to contact us directly. You are also welcome to share questions and feedback through our online form.

Sincerely,

Reapertura escolar totalmente Remota: Logísticas y Apoyos

Update on Reopening Plan

Dear St. Vrain Valley Community,

Thank you for your partnership and support as we continue to navigate the evolving coronavirus pandemic. We remain continuously connected and strongly aligned with our local and state health agency partners, including Boulder County Public Health, the Metro Denver Partnership for Health, and the Colorado Department of Public Health, and continue to follow their guidance and direction as we finalize our plans for our return to school

Last night, our Board of Education and I met with Boulder County Public Health to review the most recent direction and guidance for a safe start to the 20-21 school year. Due to the increasing number of cases in Colorado, we have made some adjustments to our in-person learning reopening plans, which are outlined below. Additionally, ALL students also have the option to enroll in our fully online learning program.

  • Due to smaller class sizes, preschool students will attend school in-person according to the schedule offered at their school.
  • Our  elementary students will attend school on a hybrid schedule where they will be assigned to one of two groups. Group 1 will attend in-person school on Mondays, Wednesdays, and every-other Friday. Group 2 will attend in-person school on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and every-other Friday. On days when students are not physically in school, they will engage in a blend of synchronous (real-time) online learning with their classroom teacher and/or independent work as assigned. This will enable students to continue progressing in their curriculum.
  • Our  middle school students will attend school on a hybrid schedule where they will be assigned to one of two groups. This will enable them to continue progressing in their curriculum.
  • Our  high school students will attend school on a hybrid schedule where they will be assigned to one of two groups. High Schools will continue to use their block schedule which will require a different hybrid schedule than elementary and middle school students. Group 1 will attend in-person school on Mondays, Tuesdays, and every-other Friday. Group 2 will attend in-person school on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and every-other Friday. On days when students are not physically in school, they will engage in a blend of synchronous (real-time) online learning with their classroom teacher and/or independent work as assigned. This will enable them to continue progressing in their curriculum.
  • Our  fully online option for all grades: In addition to our in-person learning plans, we are offering St. Vrain LaunchED Virtual Academy for students and families who would prefer a high-quality, comprehensive, and  fully-online option. Open to all St. Vrain Valley Schools’ students, this program offers preschool through 12th grade courses taught by dedicated St. Vrain Valley Schools teachers and is delivered via Schoology. The intent for this program is to serve students with a robust and rigorous online-learning experience. Students enrolled in this program will stay affiliated with their school of record. Click here to learn more about this option.

Your principal will follow-up with you early next week to share which group your student has been assigned and any other information related to their schedule for the start of the school year.

While this is our plan at this time, our goal is to return to full-time in-person learning for all students as soon as our local and state health departments determine that it is safe to do so. Additionally, the evolving nature of this health crisis will require us to remain flexible as we plan for the start of the 20-21 school year and beyond. The Governor’s Office, as well as our local and state health departments, could issue new orders at any time that would require us to alter our plans for opening in the fall and throughout the year.

Health and Safety Measures

Guidance from our county and state health agencies currently states that emerging scientific evidence of COVID-19 transmission among children is very low compared to other illnesses such as influenza. The Metro Denver Partnership for Health shared the following:

“Recently published contact tracing data from several other countries indicate that children with COVID-19 illness transmitted infection to very few other individuals in school settings: 0/122 other children in France, 0/924 children and 0/101 adults in Ireland, and 2/735 children and 0/128 adults in Australia. These observations are supported by assessments of outbreaks in household settings where children rarely appear to be the primary source of illness in other family members.”

While scientific evidence is promising regarding the very low risk of transmission in school settings, the health and safety of our students, families, teachers, and staff will always be our highest priority. To this end, we will be instituting a number of health and safety measures for the return to school that are in alignment with the recommendations of our health agency partners.

In addition to the protocols we will continue to share through our Safe with 7 campaign, we have updated the Health and Safety Measures page on our reopening plan website with some additional points of clarification below.

  • It will be very important for families to screen their students at home before sending them to school. Please download our attached home-screen checklist to use as a guide to screen your child on their in-person learning days.
  • All students will wear face coverings while at school. We know that wearing a face covering all day can be difficult, especially for younger students. We will work to schedule appropriate socially-distanced breaks and provide exceptions for certain documented medical conditions.
    • For elementary students, please ensure that your student has at least two face coverings for the start of the school year. One will be kept at the school in a ziploc bag marked with their name in the event they forget their face covering. The other will be worn each day during school hours.
    • For all students, if for any reason you have any difficulty finding a face covering for your student, please contact your school principal for assistance.
  • Our operations team has been working this summer to continue to ensure that our HVAC systems (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) are operating at their highest capacity to support  quality airflow and ventilation in classrooms and buildings, and are in full compliance with ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers) guidelines.
  • We have hired  additional custodial staff so that each school has increased staff to support disinfection and cleaning each day and again in the evenings.
  • Middle and high school students will  not be assigned lockers in alignment with our health agency partners’ school reopening guidance.
  • Social distancing will be maintained as much as possible, including one-directional hallways and staggered recess and movement times through the building. Students will be seated spaced apart to the fullest distance possible in classrooms. In cases where 6 feet of spacing is not feasible,  the American Academy of Pediatrics shared that “ evidence suggests that spacing as close as 3 feet may approach the benefits of 6 feet of space, particularly if students are wearing face coverings and are asymptomatic.” Additionally, the Denver Metro Partnership for Health has shared that the combination of our comprehensive safety measures that include face coverings, cohorting, hand washing, symptom checks, and increased cleaning will ensure a comparably safe environment for students and staff.

In the event that we become aware of a case of COVID-19 in a classroom or a school environment, Boulder County Public Health has assigned an epidemiologist and several contact tracers to St. Vrain who will work closely with our district nurses and leadership in determining and guiding the appropriate next steps. Toward this end, our system is well-prepared to support a robust online, synchronous learning environment in the event students need to quarantine or remain home for a period of time. If we need to temporarily return to a fully-online learning environment, we will work closely with our county and state health agency partners on recommended actions and closely adhere to their guidance and directions.

Next Communications

In early August, your student’s principal and I will be sharing a video that highlights and details safety procedures specific to your school. Additionally, we will continue to closely monitor the evolving pandemic with our county and state health agencies, and we will keep you informed of any required changes to our reopening plan.

We look forward to welcoming our students, teachers, and staff back into our classrooms next month. I know that this has been a very challenging time, and I want to sincerely thank all of you for your continued partnership and support. I feel honored to continue serving all of you and our incredible community. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at 303-682-7205 or share questions through our online form.

Sincerely,

Crayons to Calculators Program Provides School Supplies to St. Vrain Students

For years, Crayons to Calculators has distributed thousands of backpacks filled with school supplies to students throughout the St. Vrain Valley. A partnership between the Education Foundation for the St. Vrain Valley and Impact on Education, the program has eased the burden on families in Boulder County and the surrounding communities with financial need to ensure students have what they need to start the year off right.

Crayons to Calculators

The Crayons to Calculators program has traditionally included community supply drives and hundreds of volunteers working together to stuff backpacks for distribution. This year, due to public health guidelines, the program has been modified to protect the health and safety of volunteers and students.

This year, Crayons to Calculators will be using only community financial contributions to provide more than 5,900 St. Vrain students with school supplies to support their learning – whether that learning takes place at home or at school. School supply kits scaled to grade levels will be purchased from a wholesale provider and delivered to schools around the district. The Education Foundation will work with organizations, businesses, and individuals to support the financial costs of these kits.

Generous support from Western Disposal Services will provide half of Crayons to Calculators’ school supplies again this year. Additional monetary donations are needed more than ever to meet the needs of the students.

Superintendent’s Update: Human Rights, Respect, and Safety

Please note: the community meetings that were scheduled for September have been cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Dear St. Vrain Valley Community,

There are many important issues facing our society today, but top of mind for all of us is the physical safety, emotional well-being, and continued respect for each of our students, teachers, staff, and members of our community. I would like to take a few minutes to share some thoughts that pertain to recent events in our country and beyond.

There is no way that words can fully describe the extremely disturbing and tragic killing of George Floyd that recently took place. It was disgusting, heartbreaking, violent, and criminal, and I want to strongly denounce and condemn any discrimination, racism, and/or violence that takes place in our community, nation, and world. During this week’s Board of Education meeting, I shared some of my thoughts and perspectives regarding the important role that we in St. Vrain Valley Schools – and in public education – have in ensuring that each and every individual’s human rights are prioritized and protected. The physical and emotional well-being, respect, and safety of every student, teacher, staff member, and community member in St. Vrain has and will always be my top priority. Please take a few minutes to click on this link if you would like to listen to some of the thoughts that I shared with our Board of Education and community.

Additionally, as we do every year, we will continue our annual Fall Superintendent Update and Safety Meetings this September. These meetings provide an opportunity for open dialogue with our Board of Education, leadership team, members of our community, and myself around district priorities and topics important to our community. Specific topics will include:

  • Current events related to safety and human rights, and the impact on St. Vrain Valley Schools’ students, employees, and community members with priorities and actions as we move forward
  • St. Vrain Valley Schools’ strategic priorities
  • Allocation of resources in alignment with our mission and vision
  • Board of Education policies related to equity, non-discrimination, safety (including counselors, interventionists, school psychologists, social workers, school resource officers, campus supervisors, teachers, etc), and the well-being of our students, teachers, staff, and community

Please save the date for one of the events listed below – we will also send out a reminder in August.

  • September 1, 2020 from 6:00-7:30 p.m. at Niwot High School
  • September 2, 2020 from 6:00-7:30 p.m. at Lyons Middle Senior High School
  • September 3, 2020 from 6:00-7:30 p.m. at Skyline High School
  • September 8, 2020 from 6:00-7:30 p.m. at Erie High School
  • September 10, 2020 from 6:00-7:30 p.m. at Frederick High School

In St. Vrain Valley Schools, we remain deeply committed to advancing the success of our students, and I want to reinforce my unwavering commitment to continue taking the necessary actions as the Superintendent of St. Vrain Valley Schools to ensure the human rights, respect, and safety of each and every person. I feel honored to continue serving this community and I am incredibly proud of all that we have accomplished together. Thanks again, and please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns at 303-682-7205

Sincerely,
Don Haddad, Ed.D.

Virtual performances bring SVVSD, BVSD music students together

No audience, no director, no classmates singing or playing next to you.

To perform in concerts this spring, area middle and high school students became soloists, recording themselves alone, in their own homes. To turn all those individual recordings into a concert, their teachers became video editors and mixing engineers.

“What these singers have accomplished here is incredibly inspiring, and I truly cannot wait for the day when we can make music together again,” said Niwot High Choral Director Laura Walters, who put together an ambitious, virtual performance of “Omnia Sol” by 80 students, teachers and alumni.

SVVSD wins International Society for Technology in Education recognition

June 6, 2019, 10:08am  |  St Vrain Valley School District
By Amy Bounds, Daily Camera

The International Society for Technology in Education chose St. Vrain Valley as one of three school districts of distinction for 2019.

The award recognizes school districts that “demonstrate effectiveness and innovation in the application of educational technology, ensure equitable, accessible and appropriate technology use for all students … and exhibit a progressive mindset when it comes to challenges in education and embrace new ideas and act on them.”

“This is a very big award for our district,” said Kahle Charles, St. Vrain Valley’s executive director of curriculum.

District officials said St. Vrain Valley appears to be only the second school district in the country to receive both the International Society for Technology in Education distinction award and a Consortium for School Networking team award.
