At Eagle Crest Elementary, some of the best learning happens before the school day officially begins.
This fall, longtime Eagle Crest teacher Dave Gaccetta brought back a special opportunity for fifth grade students: accelerated morning math sessions that meets Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings from 7:45-8:25 a.m. The extra time gives students who are ready for an additional challenge the opportunity to stretch their mathematical thinking, explore more advanced concepts, and learn alongside peers who share their enthusiasm for math. It also helps prepare students for advanced math coursework in middle school by building their confidence and strengthening their problem-solving skills.
For Eagle Crest, the experience is especially meaningful because of the teacher leading it. Mr. Gaccetta has been part of the Eagle Crest community for more than 27 years and has taught generations of students. His deep knowledge of mathematics, combined with his genuine enjoyment of working with children, makes the morning class something students look forward to each week.
The early start does not seem to deter them. Students arrive ready to think, problem-solve, collaborate, and tackle challenging mathematical ideas before most of the school has even arrived.
Principal Amanda Holden says opportunities like this reflect Eagle Crest’s commitment to knowing students well and providing meaningful opportunities for every learner to grow.
“We want students to be challenged, curious, and excited about what they are capable of doing,” Holden said. “Having Mr. Gaccetta share his expertise and passion for mathematics with our students is a wonderful example of what makes Eagle Crest such a special place.”
