Niwot athlete will take her tennis skills to 2026 Special Olympics

After honing her skills on Longmont tennis courts, athlete Ashlee Wood is upping her game with a trip to the national stage.

The Niwot woman is one of roughly 100 athletes who will represent Colorado in the Special Olympics USA Games next year. The games, which will be held in June, will bring athletes from all 50 states to the competition in Minnesota. Wood is one of four tennis players — two women and two men — on the Colorado team.

Wood became eligible for the USA Games when she clinched the gold medal in doubles at the state Special Olympics tennis competition earlier this month. She said it “means the world” to get to compete against athletes from around the country.

“I’m very excited,” said Wood, who is 20. “Hopefully, it will take me up to the next level.”

Wood plays for the Longmont Racqueteers, a Special Olympics tennis team consisting of athletes with intellectual disabilities and volunteer “unified partners” who play with the athletes in doubles matches.

SVVSD post gains in math, literacy scores on state tests

Mirroring a statewide trend, local students’ math and literacy scores are continuing to rebound after the COVID-19 pandemic shuttered schools five years ago.

Most scores in the Boulder Valley and St. Vrain Valley school districts are now higher than before the pandemic, while both districts also outscored the state’s standardized tests at all grade levels, according to scores released Thursday by the Colorado Department of Education.

Students in the spring took the Colorado Measures of Academic Success tests in math and language arts in grades three through eight, as well as science in grades five, eight and 11. High schoolers took PSAT and SAT tests for math and language arts. This year’s scores are available at cde.state.co.us/assessment/cmas-dataandresults.

Statewide, nearly every grade saw literacy and math test scores at or above pre-pandemic levels. As with last year’s scores, fourth- and eighth-graders’ literacy scores continue to lag behind those recorded by students in 2019. Eighth-graders’ math results also haven’t recovered since the pandemic.

St. Vrain Valley Schools Recognized by Forbes as Colorado’s Top K-12 Employer

St. Vrain Valley Schools has been recognized by Forbes Magazine as one of America’s Best-in-State Employers, ranking as the highest-rated K-12 school district in Colorado. The honor reflects St. Vrain’s commitment to fostering a workplace where educators and staff can thrive while advancing the district’s mission of delivering an exceptional education to approximately 33,000 students.

Now in its seventh year, the Best-in-State Employers list is based on a survey of more than 160,000 employees nationwide. The list highlights organizations that excel at supporting their workforce and cultivating environments where employees feel valued. In Colorado, only 60 organizations were named to the list, including 11 in education, with St. Vrain Valley Schools earning the top spot among school districts.

With the highest base pay for teachers in the state at $64,500, St. Vrain Valley prioritizes investing in employees and continues to attract and retain outstanding educators and staff who champion student success.

“This recognition from Forbes is a reflection of the incredible educators and staff who give their very best each day to support our students and community,” said Dr. Jackie Kapushion, Superintendent of St. Vrain Valley Schools. “We are grateful to have such talented and dedicated professionals in St. Vrain, and we remain committed to investing in their success so they can continue advancing extraordinary opportunities for every child.”

Superintendent’s Update

Dear St. Vrain Valley Schools Community,

We have so much to celebrate in the St. Vrain Valley community! Over the past week, I’ve had the joy of visiting schools and seeing all of our students and teachers back in the classroom, engaged in learning. Their energy and enthusiasm remind me why I’m excited to serve as your new superintendent and partner with you as we begin this new school year.

With the highest graduation rate in the Denver Metro Area, rigorous academics, and countless opportunities in the visual and performing arts, athletics, STEM and robotics, we are committed to advancing success for our students. This is our St. Vrain Commitment—that each and every student will be recognized for their unique talents and receive an exceptional PreK-12 experience, graduating with a strong competitive advantage. This represents why I call our comprehensive system that serves every student with empathy, opportunity and excellence the #StVrainAdvantage.

Here are just a few highlights of how our students, teachers, and staff continue to achieve at the highest levels:

Academic Excellence:

  • Last year, St. Vrain students earned over 44,000 college credits through Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, and concurrent enrollment courses, saving families approximately $23 million in future tuition costs.
  • We’re one of only four Colorado districts—and 373 in North America—recognized on the College Board’s Annual AP District Honor Roll, with 8 high schools earning AP Honor Roll status in 2023 and 2024.
  • Throughout the summer, thousands of students continued their learning through our Project Launch program, which provides four additional weeks of rigorous instruction in math and language arts, while hundreds more participated in advanced STEM and Career and Technical Education opportunities through our Innovation Center and Career Elevation and Technology Center.

Innovation Leadership:

  • Forbes Magazine recognized St. Vrain as a Best-In-State Employer and the highest ranked K-12 employer in Colorado. We also have the highest base pay for teachers in Colorado, at $64,500, ensuring we attract the very best educators to our community.
  • St. Vrain offers nationally recognized signature programs that are first of their kind, including Four P-TECH Programs, Pathways to Teaching, Mobile Innovation Lab, Cybersecurity Mobile Lab, Underwater Robotics Programming, Student Drone Performance Team, Advanced Manufacturing Academy, Toyota TECS Program, and Artificial Intelligence Student Team.
  • The NAMM Foundation has honored us with the Best Communities for Music Education award for four consecutive years since 2021.

Community Investment:

  • Your continued investment in the 2024 bond has enabled construction projects to progress throughout the summer, enhancing learning opportunities for our students. Construction has commenced on the new Mead PK-8, our new high school in Frederick, the Innovation Center expansion, and more. Design work is also underway for additional projects including a new CTE Center and elementary school in Erie. We’re deeply grateful for your ongoing support, which allows us to provide world-class facilities.
  • We’ve earned approximately $71 million in highly-competitive grants for programs that advance innovation and student learning.

I want to personally thank you for your partnership and investment in our students, teachers, and staff. Your commitment to high-quality public schools demonstrates the strength of our community and your belief in the potential of every child. This fall, I’ll be hosting annual open forums in each of our geographic areas to connect with our community, listen to your questions and suggestions, share our many student successes, and discuss our vision for maintaining our tradition of promoting positive impact through the St. Vrain Commitment. I look forward to meeting you and hearing your thoughts on how we can continue to provide every student with the #StVrainAdvantage.

Together, we are building a stronger future for our children and our communities.

Sincerely,

Jackie Kapushion, Ed.D.

Creating Focused Learning Through Responsible Cell Phone Use

As we continue our commitment to ensuring every student receives an exceptional PreK-12 experience and graduates with a strong competitive advantage, we want to share important information about our approach to cell phones and personal devices in our schools.

Why This Matters: Protecting Learning Time

We know that as parents and caregivers, you’re navigating the same questions we are: How do we help students develop a healthy relationship with technology while ensuring they can focus on learning during school hours? Research consistently shows that when students have access to their personal devices during instructional time, it can significantly inhibit their ability to engage deeply with lessons, collaborate effectively with peers, and develop the sustained attention skills essential for academic success.

It’s important to distinguish between different types of screen time. While we embrace technology as a powerful learning tool—using iPads for interactive lessons, computers for research projects, and educational apps that enhance understanding—personal device usage often involves social media, games, and messaging that can fragment a student’s attention and disrupt the learning environment for everyone.

Our Approach: Clear Expectations, Consistent Support

To create the focused, engaging classrooms our students deserve, we’ve established clear guidelines for cell phone and personal device use:

During School Hours:

  • Phones should remain off or on silent mode
  • Devices must be kept out of sight during class time (in backpacks, lockers, or a teacher-provided cell phone holder) unless a teacher specifically requests their use for learning
  • Students may use phones during designated breaks like lunch or recess, following individual school guidelines
  • Emergency use is permitted with staff approval

What’s Not Permitted:

  • Photography, video, or audio recording without explicit teacher or administrator permission
  • Texting, calling, or social media use during class time
  • Any use that disrupts learning or violates student privacy

These expectations apply to all personal devices, including smartwatches and other wearables.

Supporting Students Through Clear Consequences

We believe in teaching responsibility through clear, progressive consequences that help students learn from their choices:

For Elementary Students: We partner closely with families from the first incident, ensuring parents are informed and involved in helping their child understand expectations.

For Secondary Students: We start with reminders and short-term consequences, escalating only when students need additional support to meet expectations.

In all cases, our goal is education and growth, not punishment. We want students to develop self-regulation skills that will serve them throughout their lives.

Why We’re Asking for Your Partnership

Your support at home makes all the difference. When families and schools work together to establish consistent expectations about technology use, students are more successful. Here are ways you can partner with us:

  • Have conversations at home about appropriate times and places for device use
  • Support our school expectations by reinforcing them in family discussions
  • Reach out with questions or concerns—we’re here to work with you

Our Shared Goal: Preparing Students for Success

In our classrooms, students regularly engage with technology for research, creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving. These are the digital literacy skills that will serve them in college, careers, and life. By creating focused learning environments during school hours, we’re helping students develop the concentration, critical thinking, and interpersonal skills they need to thrive in an increasingly complex world.

We understand that every family situation and values related to cell phone usage is unique, and we’re committed to working with you to address any concerns or special circumstances. Please do not hesitate to reach out to your child’s teacher, school administrator, or our district office if you have questions about our expectations or how they affect your student.

Thank you for your partnership in creating exceptional learning experiences for all our students. Together, we’re helping them develop the skills, knowledge, and habits that will serve them for a lifetime.

New St. Vrain Valley superintendent welcomes teachers

New St. Vrain Valley Superintendent Jackie Kapushion welcomed the school district’s 2,000 teachers to the school year with a speech Wednesday at Longmont’s Skyline High School that focused on the power of firsts, including the first day of school.

For some, it’s the most consistent safe space they’ll have, and for others it’s the spark that will ignite a love of learning or a discovery about themselves they never expected. “
