St. Vrain Valley Schools Named Finalist for Prestigious National Award

St. Vrain Valley Schools has been recognized as one of three finalists for the prestigious Districts of Distinction: Academic Excellence award by District Administration, highlighting the district’s exceptional commitment to academic excellence and innovation in education. The announcement came during the District Administration Leadership Institute Superintendent Summit in Naples, Florida, on December 13, 2023.

St. Vrain Valley Schools demonstrates a strong belief in the power of public education to build the next generation of leaders and innovators who will advance the success of our communities, state, nation, and world. The district earned this distinguished recognition for its focus on providing a comprehensive foundation to bolster robust innovation, which has transformed educational opportunities for students across the region. This recognition celebrates St. Vrain’s dedication to preparing students for future success through innovative career pathways and expanded learning opportunities.

At the heart of St. Vrain’s success is its portfolio of more than 70 career pathways, including standout programs that are reshaping education in Colorado. For example, the Pathways to Teaching (P-TEACH) program has emerged as a powerful solution to address the teaching workforce shortage. Through strategic partnerships with the University of Colorado and Early Milestones Colorado, P-TEACH offers students the opportunity to earn college credits toward a Bachelor’s degree in Education while still in high school. The program has helped 317 high school students earn 1,598 college credits while completing over 16,000 hours of valuable field experience. Starting with just one course and 17 students, P-TEACH has grown to include 10 courses offering 37 college credits, and now includes a comprehensive four-year bachelor’s degree pathway. The program’s success is evident in its outcomes – 78% of graduating seniors plan to pursue education careers, and the district has already hired its first P-TEACH graduate as a kindergarten teacher. This program is actively building the next generation of educators who will shape our children’s future.

The district’s commitment to innovation is further demonstrated through its Advanced Global Interactive Learning Environments (AGILE) program. This cutting-edge initiative breaks down traditional barriers to advanced coursework by offering synchronous online classes to students across the district and rural Colorado. Through state-of-the-art technology and interactive virtual classrooms, AGILE has expanded access to advanced coursework for 571 students. The program began with just four teachers offering six courses in 2022 and has rapidly grown to over 20 courses today, serving both St. Vrain students and learners from rural districts across Colorado. AGILE’s success exemplifies St. Vrain’s mission to prepare all students for future success while ensuring equitable access to advanced learning opportunities.

Additionally, St. Vrain Valley Schools launched Colorado’s first Pre-Law career and technical education (CTE) program, which has seen remarkable growth from 90 to over 230 students in just two years. This groundbreaking pathway provides students with comprehensive exposure to American civil and criminal law, legal systems, and theory through hands-on experiences. Students develop critical thinking, deep reading comprehension, and public speaking skills while engaging in mock trials, debates, and interactive discussions. Through partnerships with the Boulder County District Attorney, City of Boulder Police Department, and the University of Colorado Law Library, the program connects students to real-world legal experiences through job shadows, internships, and work-based learning opportunities. The Pre-Law pathway represents St. Vrain’s commitment to preparing students for high-demand careers while building essential skills that translate across multiple professional fields.

The Districts of Distinction award recognizes school districts nationwide that have implemented innovative, replicable programs leading to significant improvements in student achievement and community engagement. Finalists were selected based on their demonstration of innovative practices, measurable student achievement, and positive community impact.

St. Vrain Valley Schools continues to lead the way in educational innovation, providing students with the tools, knowledge, and experiences they need to thrive in an ever-evolving world. Through programs like P-TEACH, AGILE, and Pre-Law CTE, the district is creating a model for educational excellence that can be replicated by schools across the nation. By giving students a vision for their future, over the past 15 years, St. Vrain’s graduation rates have increased from a 75% overall graduation rate in 2010 to 94.3% in 2024. The district’s Hispanic graduation rate has also increased from 55% in 2010 to 90% in 2024. This is with among the highest graduation requirements in Colorado.

Building Tomorrow’s Leaders: How St. Vrain Valley Schools Develops the Top Skills of the Future

In an era of unprecedented technological advancement and global change, preparing students for future success requires more than traditional academic knowledge. The World Economic Forum’s “Top 10 Skills of 2025” outlines the critical competencies that will define workforce readiness in the coming years – and St. Vrain Valley Schools is leading the way in cultivating these essential skills in our students.

Through innovative programs, hands-on learning experiences, and real-world applications, St. Vrain students are developing the durable skills they need for a strong competitive advantage in our rapidly evolving world.

Analytical Thinking and Innovation

At the Innovation Center of St. Vrain Valley Schools, students tackle real-world challenges through paid work experiences with industry partners. High school students engineer remotely operated vehicles to study endangered species, develop new applications for artificial intelligence, and create virtual reality experiences for community partners. Meanwhile, elementary students engage in robotics programs where they design automated solutions to real-world problems, and middle school students participate in design challenges that require them to analyze complex systems and propose innovative solutions. Through programs like the Mobile Innovation Lab, even our youngest learners experience cutting-edge technology and begin developing the analytical mindset needed for future success.

Active Learning and Complex Problem-Solving

The district’s design thinking approach encourages students to empathize with users, ideate creative solutions, and test their ideas through rapid prototyping. Elementary students across the system tackle Design Thinking challenges like designing water filtration systems or creating solutions for sustainable energy use. Middle school students engage in hands-on engineering projects where they explore environmental science, biomedical solutions, and computer science through app creation and robotics. Through our district-wide design thinking initiatives, students identify real community challenges and develop innovative solutions, from addressing local environmental concerns to improving school safety systems. At the high school level, students earn industry certifications while working on complex projects for real clients, from developing sophisticated websites to programming autonomous drones. These experiences are enhanced through extensive partnerships with industry leaders who provide mentorship and real-world context for student learning.

Critical Thinking and Creativity

Through St. Vrain’s focus academies and programs, students apply critical thinking skills while exploring their passions. At the high school level, our specialized academies – including aerospace and engineering, energy, biomedical sciences, business, medical and biosciences, leadership, STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), and visual and performing arts – allow students to dive deep into their areas of interest while developing crucial analytical capabilities. St. Vrain’s four P-TECH programs also exemplify this approach, allowing students to earn both a high school diploma and an associate degree in fields like cybersecurity, computer information systems, business, and biochemistry. These programs and more are complemented by extensive Advanced Placement and concurrent enrollment opportunities that challenge students to think critically while earning college credit.

Leadership and Social Influence

At St. Vrain, leadership development is purposefully integrated throughout students’ educational journey. Elementary students build foundational leadership skills through collaborative projects and student council initiatives that give them authentic opportunities to develop their voice and practice influence among peers. In middle school, students take on increasing responsibility through design challenges and STEM projects that require them to present their ideas and lead team initiatives. The district’s robust robotics programs provide natural opportunities for older students to mentor younger ones while developing their own leadership capabilities. At the high school level, the Innovation Center provides a professional environment where students manage real client projects, collaborate with industry partners, and lead complex technical initiatives. Through these experiences, students develop the professional communication skills and leadership capabilities that will serve them well in future careers.

Technology Skills and Resilience

St. Vrain’s comprehensive approach to technology education emphasizes both technical proficiency and the adaptability to embrace emerging tools. Elementary students engage with technology through guided exploration and creative projects in their classrooms, building digital literacy foundations while developing problem-solving persistence. Middle school students advance their skills through increasingly sophisticated projects involving programming, digital design, and engineering challenges. The district’s extensive technology infrastructure allows students to work with professional-grade tools while building the resilience to tackle complex technical problems. Through the Career Elevation and Technology Center, Innovation Center, and P-TECH programs, high school students can earn industry certifications while working on advanced technology projects in areas like cybersecurity, computer information systems, and digital design. These challenging real-world experiences help students develop both technical expertise and the emotional resilience needed to persevere through difficult problems.

Preparing for an Evolving Future

As the pace of change continues to accelerate, St. Vrain Valley Schools remains committed to providing students with both rigorous academic foundations and the essential skills identified by the World Economic Forum. Through our innovative programs, industry partnerships, and focus on future-ready learning, we’re ensuring our graduates have the competitive advantage needed to thrive in 2025 and beyond. With over 90 corporate and industry partners, St. Vrain ensures its programs remain aligned with emerging workforce needs. The district’s innovative programs in areas like artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and advanced manufacturing prepare students for high-demand careers while building the adaptability needed for long-term success.

The skills that will define success in the coming years align perfectly with St. Vrain’s mission to prepare students for their future rather than our past. By continuing to emphasize analytical thinking, creativity, technological literacy, and adaptability, we’re building tomorrow’s leaders and innovators today.

LSACE Students Build District and Community Connections Through Their Pet Treat Business

LSACE student and para smile while packaging dog treats.

On Friday mornings, the cafeteria at Main Street smells of delicious, warm baked treats. The aroma fills the hallway as students in the Life Skills Alternative Cooperative Education (LSACE) program are making delicious peanut butter dog treats for their pet treat business, Main Treat.

One of the requirements of the LSACE program is to have a student-based business, and Special Education Teacher Marie Naumann felt like Main Treat would be a good place to start. “The idea formed a few years ago with some of my students who loved animals, and making dog treats seemed like a great way to tap into that interest.”

After visiting a local pet shop, conducting research, and perfecting their recipe, students found that peanut butter was the ideal ingredient to use. Experts say dogs crave foods that have the nutrients they need, and since peanut butter is rich in fat, salt, sugar, and healthy proteins, dogs naturally love it.

During their bi-monthly sale at Main Street School, they offer peanut butter biscuits in a variety of sizes and shapes. For the upcoming holiday, they branched out from their typical bone and paw shapes and made extra-large snowman and paw-shaped biscuits, perfect for stocking stuffers. Additionally, they offer Pumpkin Pupcakes, which dogs also go crazy for.

While dogs benefit from eating the tasty treats, students gain lifelong skills from making the treats. Students are fully invested in their business, and they’re involved in everything from baking and packaging to shopping and selling. Cassie Chase, special education teacher, sees the benefits firsthand. “There are so many skills that are tapped into while making the treats, and it really gives students that sense of purpose. There is something for everyone depending on their interests, and it gives students the opportunity to be involved in the kitchen.”

LSACE students have been fortunate to build district and community connections through their business. They collaborated with Main Street’s student-run print shop, PrintStorm, to create the dog treat molds using a 3D printer. Additionally, students donated treats to the Longmont Humane Society for them to sell at their store. While the profits went to the Humane Society, students had the opportunity to stock the shelves and see their product on display.

Trail Ridge Middle School Leads the Way with Unified Theater Program

Trail Ridge Middle School has become the first middle school in St. Vrain Valley Schools to introduce a Unified Theater program, a milestone that highlights the school’s dedication to providing meaningful opportunities for students of all abilities. Building on its strong Unified program, which has earned numerous awards, including this year’s “Chaka Sutton” Unified Champion School of the Year from Special Olympics Colorado, the theater initiative showcases the schools focus on fostering collaboration and connections.

“The idea to start Unified Theater program at Trail Ridge felt natural,” said Drama Teacher Lindsay Sullivan. “I knew if the district was going to create a Unified program at the middle school level, it had to start here. Seeing the success of Unified Theater programs at Niwot High and Frederick High gave me the confidence to take the leap.”

The program’s debut production, The Enchanted Garden, will premiere on Friday, December 6, at 5 p.m. at Trail Ridge Middle School. Co-written by Sullivan and Special Education Teacher Becci Warren the play aligns with the program’s goals by celebrating themes of friendship and kindness. “Writing my own play allowed me to create the most accommodating experience possible,” said Sullivan. “The Enchanted Garden offers roles tailored to each student’s unique strengths and opens opportunities for students of all abilities, both on stage and behind the scenes.”

Trail Ridge MS Unified Theater production rehearsal

Rehearsals have already shown how impactful Unified Theater can be. Students from Sullivan’s Technical Theater program have taken on mentorship roles, helping peers with speech and movement during rehearsals. “It’s been inspiring to see students not only perform but also help each other with speech and movement. The connections they’re building are incredible,” said Sullivan. “Many of our Unified students are performing for their first time, and their growth has been a source of pride for everyone involved.”

For eighth grader Molly Brickley, being part of Unified Theater has been an unforgettable experience. “I’ve had the privilege of working on lights, sound, and even designing the costumes for the production. I joined Unified Theater because I love helping everyone, and theater is something I’m really passionate about,” she said. “Having Unified Theater at our school is so exciting. It’s amazing to see everyone working together and supporting each other.”

The program has been met with enthusiasm from parents, students, and staff alike. Parents of Unified students are particularly excited about the new opportunities it provides, giving their children a chance to participate in ways that were not available before. The initiative highlights the school’s dedication to collaboration and kindness while reinforcing that theater truly is for everyone.

Trail Ridge’s Unified Theater program exemplifies the school’s mission to create opportunities that connect and empower students. “The more programs we create that bring people together, the stronger our school community becomes — not just within our walls, but outside of them as well,” said Warren “We want to develop a school where everyone has something they can participate in and feel successful. The confidence this builds in students will encourage them to be great people throughout their lives.”

Black Rock Elementary’s Loretta Harvey Honored as VFW Teacher of the Year Nominee

Black Rock Elementary’s beloved music teacher, Loretta Harvey, was recognized by the local Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) chapter as their Teacher of the Year nominee during the school’s annual Black Rock Gives Back event on Tuesday, Dec. 3.

This recognition celebrates educators who foster civic engagement, community pride, and a love for learning. Mrs. Harvey’s dedication to her craft has touched the lives of countless students over her 16 years at Black Rock Elementary. Her innovative performances, such as a choreographed rendition of “Stars and Stripes Forever” that formed the American flag, highlight her creative approach to teaching music.

“Mrs. Harvey has been a cornerstone of Black Rock Elementary, inspiring creativity and self-expression in her students,” shared Principal Sharla Kaczar. “From her engaging music classes to her dynamic performances that resonate with both students and parents alike, Mrs. Harvey’s enthusiasm for the arts has cultivated a vibrant cultural environment within our school.”

Mrs. Harvey received the award as part of the evening’s festivities, which also included the school’s annual holiday musical performance and food drive supporting the Erie Community Food Bank.

Red Hawk’s Kindergarten Team Sets the Stage for Success

For many students, kindergarten is their first experience in a classroom, and at Red Hawk Elementary, Susan Denton, Jen Garcia, and Deirdre Nagle, ensure it’s one they’ll never forget. With a blend of expertise, collaboration, and dedication, this team turns the first year of school into a foundation for lifelong success.

Denton, Garcia, and Nagle bring years of experience and a shared commitment to their students’ growth. Collaboration is at the heart of their teaching. The team meets weekly to plan lessons, discuss strategies, and support each other’s efforts. “Between the three of us, we have so much knowledge to share,” said Denton. “With our combined experience it allows us to address challenges effectively and ensure we meet the needs of every student.”

One of their strengths is creating engaging, play-based learning experiences. “We value play because students can learn so much through it,” said Garcia. A favorite tradition is the “Day of Play,” held in the afternoon of late-start days. Each kindergarten classroom transforms into a different themed environment, offering activities like dramatic play, sensory exploration, building projects, and group games. These experiences help spark creativity and foster social-emotional development. “It’s a great way for us to work on social-emotional aspects of school and learning,” said Nagle. “We’ve found it strengthens our relationships with students and gives them opportunities to form different friendships.”

Red Hawk Elementary student in Kindergarten class

The team also takes a thoughtful approach to balancing academics with social-emotional learning. They guide students in mastering foundational skills in reading, writing, and math while helping them navigate friendships, emotions, and problem-solving. “We take academics seriously and work tirelessly to make sure our students are progressing,” said Garcia. “But we also recognize they are just five and six year-olds, so it’s important to allow them to be little while teaching them how to take care of themselves and others.”

Their dedication extends beyond the classroom. The team collaborates closely with support staff during professional learning community sessions, reviewing data and planning interventions that are tailored to individual student needs. “We work together not just for our own classrooms but for all of our students,” said Nagle. “That shared responsibility makes us stronger as a team.”

Trust and mutual support is the foundation of their partnership. Whether brainstorming lessons, sharing resources, or stepping in to assist one another, Denton, Garcia, and Nagle, rely on their shared expertise to create a positive and effective learning environment. “We trust each other to make the best decisions for our students,” said Denton. “That trust allows us to work effectively and focus on what matters most — our students.”

Through their collaboration, innovative teaching, and unwavering dedication, Nagle, Denton, and Garcia have created a kindergarten program that is both nurturing and academically rigorous. Their work ensures students leave their classrooms prepared for the next grade and equipped with the confidence and skills they need to thrive in the years ahead.
