Superintendent’s Update

Dear St. Vrain Valley Schools Community,

It has been a very strong start to the 2022-2023 school year, and I want to thank you for all that you do to support the continued success of our students, teachers, and staff. Over the past month, I enjoyed meeting with our community during our five Town Hall events to share information regarding our upcoming priorities, and to hear your feedback and ideas for continued growth and innovation. We have such an outstanding community of families, teachers, staff, and students who are all championing the advancement of our schools. I have also greatly enjoyed meeting with this year’s cohort of students serving on the district’s Student Advisory Committee, and hearing their collective passion for strengthening and supporting our schools.

I am also excited to share that as the district continues to invest in security upgrades, mental health resources, counselors, and other supports to ensure the well-being and success of our students, we will be adding a new Campus Supervisor position to all of our elementary schools. Currently at all middle and high schools in St. Vrain, Campus Supervisors promote safe and secure learning environments for students by providing an additional layer of facility monitoring, oversight, and communication regarding any potential risks or safety concerns. These roles also play an important part in fostering a positive building environment by building relationships with students and serving as another trusted adult in the building.

This fall, we already have so many achievements to celebrate across our system, including numerous National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists, outstanding Unified Bowling competitions, many incredible music performances and theater productions, wonderful homecoming celebrations at each of our high schools, and thousands of middle and high school students competing in athletics with incredible teamwork and sportsmanship. We’ve also had a strong start to our AGILE (Advanced Global Interactive Learning Environments) telecommunications program which gives high school students the opportunity to enroll in unique and advanced courses and attend class synchronously online with students from high schools across the district.

Further, we continue to win many large and competitive grants, nearing approximately $32 million in the past four years, some of which are featured in the news highlights below.

Additionally, we continue to see large gains in student achievement. In our 2022 assessment results, St. Vrain students have earned the highest third grade reading scores in the history of the district, alongside increasing achievement scores in math. This is significant in light of the declines both statewide and nationally in student assessment scores due to learning disruptions during the pandemic. The Class of 2022 is expected to have the highest graduation rate in the history of the district, approaching 92% for a four-year graduation rate. As additional students complete their credits to graduate, this number continues to increase, as the district’s drop out rate remains below 1%. We have also celebrated 40 new graduates from our P-TECH program at Skyline High School who have earned their associate degree simultaneously with their high school diploma at no cost to the student, as well as growing numbers of P-TEACH students in our schools who will become future teachers in St. Vrain.

As the school year moves forward, we will continue to expand opportunities for students to engage in innovative and unique learning opportunities that not only advance their academic achievement, but also support their continued social and emotional growth, and build stronger connections to their communities. In the coming weeks and months, we will continue to share stories of student excellence, including capstone projects from our Silver Creek Leadership Academy, SMART Team biomedical research projects at Longmont High School, upcoming robotics competitions, and so much more.

Please follow our #StVrainStorm hashtag on Twitter to see many of the incredible achievements and activities happening across all 60 of our schools and programs. I have also started a new podcast where I cover topics related to public education to spark conversation on building systems of excellence and championship cultures that will drive the future success of public education and our world. Click here to listen and subscribe. Additionally, I had the opportunity to be a guest on the Colorado Business Roundtable’s latest podcast episode, where I also serve on their Board of Directors, to discuss the continuing evolution of education and business. Click here to listen to this important conversation with the organization’s President, Debbie Brown.

I am incredibly proud of the outstanding work and achievements of our students, teachers, staff, and community. Again, thank you for all that you do to support the success of our students and schools.

Sincerely,
Don Haddad, Ed.D.
