St. Vrain Valley Schools opens district’s first fully ADA accessible playground
Please join us in celebrating the grand opening of Main Street School’s new playground on Monday, October 26, at 1:00pm. As one of the few fully ADA accessible playgrounds in Colorado, the space will provide for all students at Main Street School the opportunity to play outside in a safe and engaging environment. In the planning stages during 2014, the new playground was made possible by bond funding passed in the 2008 election.
“The addition of the playground has made a tremendous impact on our students and families,” said Heidi Weekley, Administrative Coordinator at Main Street School. “Students are experiencing a deeper sense of school pride and community as they learn while experiencing play in an area accessible by all abilities.”
Key features of the new playground include areas of music, motion, and sanctuary such as sensory elements with drums, xylophones, and a boat that sways; a slide equipped to eliminate static electricity that can inhibit the play experience for students with cochlear implants; and visual panels with letters, numbers, and puzzles that include braille. The playground also features an area for outdoor experiential learning, including sandblasted animal footprints and a garden area with plants for identification and discovery.
“I like the music area because you can make music, the metal slide, the fast slide and the rocking boat,” said a student in the Serious Emotional Disability program at Main Street. “It’s really great because we don’t always have to just run in the field. The playground is way more fun!”
