In business attire and high heels, Angela Tagtow, a high-ranking government official from Washington, D.C., is not your typical substitute teacher, but kindergartners in her nutrition mini-class at Flagstaff Academy didn't seem to notice.
As executive director of the Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion at the United States Department of Agriculture, Tagtow oversees federal dietary guidelines, including the iconic food pyramid that was replaced in 2010 by the "MyPlate" icon for healthy eating.
Through a combination of teacher and student dedication, strong support from school and district leadership, and overall skills-based preparation, St Vrain Valley Schools has achieved its highest ACT scores ever with a composite score of 20.9, compared to the state average of 20.4. This score demonstrates a significant increase from previous years, but more importantly reflects the shared value that each and every student deserves the opportunity to leave our schools better prepared for college and the demands of tomorrow’s career landscape.

At CalWood Environmental Camp, students stay from Wednesday to Friday, learning Homesteading and Orienteering skills. The idea came up two years ago, when staff wanted to create a signature event that fifth graders would remember. “We have kids from last year coming back and reminiscing about our trip to Cal-Wood.” says Jeff Cannon, a fifth grade teacher at Prairie Ridge.
