At 83, SVVSD's longest-serving employee is still driven

Talking with 83-year-old John Zielinski, one might conclude that teaching teens to drive must be the secret to a long, vital life.

An educator with St. Vrain Valley School District for 48 consecutive years, Zielinski taught physical education, general science and driver education at Erie High School before becoming district driver education coordinator in 1988.

Prior to relocating, Zielinski, who holds a master's degree in education from California State University, Los Angeles, taught for 10 years in California, where he met his wife, a former English teacher.

Sixth-graders had the run of the school at Erie Middle School on Tuesday for their first day, with about 92 eighth-grade mentors easing them into the world of lockers, switching classes and more freedom.

Erie Middle is one of several St. Vrain Valley schools using an eighth-grade mentorship program called WEB (Where Everybody Belongs).
