Longmont High School Drumline makes World Championship semifinals

The Longmont High School Drumline advanced to the World Championships semifinals in Dayton, Ohio, after finishing third in its group of 15 in Thursday's preliminary competition.

The top four in each of the four groups moved on to the semifinals, which take place on Friday. The finals follow on the same day.

In March, the group — which also features students from Skyline High School, Mead High School and Longs Peak Middle School — finished first in the Rocky Mountain Percussion Association (RMPA) competition number four, and they followed that with a first place at the State Championships, leading to their appearance at the World Championships.

Band director David Merrill said that the State Championships went very well, with Longmont winning by a massive six points, which he said is the equivalent of scoring six touchdowns.

"We won our classification, and then they have one special award that they give to one drumline regardless of classification for sportsmanship, which is for good behavior and supporting other drumlines," he said. "They won that as well so that was a really big honor. It says a lot of great things."
