St. Vrain Valley School District recognized for increasing access to AP classes

Longmont's Skyline High School, with the help of a grant, in 2014 started working on diversifying its Advanced Placement classes.
 
In 2013, the school had 127 students enrolled in AP classes. This year, AP class enrollment is up to 773.
 
To support students, the school offers mock exam opportunities and Saturday study sessions.

Erie High students see robotic surgery demo

A doctor and nurse from Avista Adventist Hospital recently signed up to bring a travelling surgical robot to Erie High School, giving students a look at the latest surgical technology.
 
The da Vinci Xi surgical robot, one of four travelling robots in the country used for demonstrations, is the same model that's used for surgeries at Avista.
 
At Erie High, groups of students in engineering and anatomy and physiology classes learned more about the machine and how it's used.

The St. Vrain Valley School District is moving to an online application for the upcoming open enrollment season, plus a more centralized process.

Open enrollment starts Dec. 3.

"Parents don't have to get up early and stand in line," said Amber Muir, St. Vrain's student data manager. "It's an improvement for St. Vrain."

Patty Quinones doesn't want to know what kids want to be when they grow up, but instead what problems they want to solve in their lifetimes.

"We want kids to be very, very prepared for their futures," said Quinones, the St. Vrain Valley School District's assistant superintendent of innovation.

Longs Peak Middle School students learn cybersecurity basics

Longs Peak Middle School eighth-grader Carmen Oliveros started coding in elementary school and now is tackling protecting computers from hackers.

"It's opened a whole new world of computers," she said. "I'm learning a lot of cool security ideas."

Carmen is one of about a dozen students learning to combat online threats in the Longmont school's new cybersecurity club.

St. Vrain seeks to grow teacher rolls by sparking students' interest

The St. Vrain Valley School District is tackling a statewide teacher shortage by creating a grow-your-own program for high school students.
