Insurance - Students

Insurance can help pay for injuries students might sustain while at school or while participating in school activities. The District encourages parents/guardians to evaluate their insurance coverage levels to determine if they have adequate insurance protection for any injuries their children might sustain while at school or while participating in school activities.

Student Insurance Programs

The District does not directly sell or offer accident, health, or dental insurance for students. However, the District has selected Nationwide Insurance Company to offer student insurance programs. Various plans and options are offered through the company. Brochures describing the plans and options are available at all school offices. The company also maintains a separate web site. The web site allows for online enrollment and provides plan and pricing information.

Free and Low-cost Health Insurance Options

Our Family Outreach Liaisons can help eligible children and families apply for Health First Colorado (Colorado’s Medicaid Program), Child Health Plan Plus (CHP+) and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Health First Colorado and CHP+ are free or low-cost health insurance plans with no monthly premiums. Benefits include well-child and doctor visits, sports physicals, immunizations, prescriptions, hospital services, mental/behavioral health, prenatal care, and dental and vision care. SNAP (formerly known as food stamps) is a monthly benefit that can be used like a debit card at local retailers to buy a variety of food items. Your family may qualify for CHP+ if over-income for Medicaid and cannot afford private insurance. For more information or an easy 15 minute screening for eligibility, please contact our Family Outreach Liaisons at 303-702-7836 or 303-702-7840.

    Insurance Requirements - Athletes

Before any student will be permitted to participate in any CHSAA (Colorado High School Activities Association) sports activities, health or accident insurance (such as the insurance offered through the student insurance programs, detailed above) covering the student must be purchased or the Athletic Insurance Waiver must be signed. The Athletic Insurance Waiver can be obtained by contacting a high school athletic department secretary.

    District Liability

Liability claims against the District for injuries that occur at school or during schools activities may be barred by the Colorado Governmental Immunity Act (CGIA). This Act substantially limits the liability of the District. The details of the CGIA are available in the Colorado statute (Title 24, Article 10).
