Athletics, Activities, & Fine Arts Department News
Growing up longeing horses, holding a long lead rope while a horse circled for exercise and training, gave Kara Lubin a model for letting kids horse around as they warm up to workout academically.
"Longeing helps horses to calm down and pay attention," she said.
Lubin wondered if making time and space for kids to walk, skip, or run laps — minus the halter and lead rope — would help them settle down to study.
Fourth grader Mario Nunez stares straight ahead as he makes another lap around the basketball court at Mead Elementary School Tuesday.
Mario, 9, is picturing a gold medal hanging on his bedroom wall — the driving force behind his dedication.
"It would be my first medal," Mario said. "I keep running to get a medal."
Mario is one of about 100 kids at Mead Elementary School participating in the 100-Mile Club, a program that launched at 15 St. Vrain Valley schools this fall.
